Short Description
The Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding is one of the leading departments in the university. The mission of the department is to serve the country by achieving the highest standard in the advancement of knowledge in the field of Genentics and Plant Breeding.
Genetics is a branch of biology concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation and heredity in organisms. Meanwhile plant breeding is the science of changing the traits of plants in order to produce desired characteristics. Plant breeding can be accomplished through many different methods that uses the knowledge of genetics and chromosomes.
Since its establishment in 1974, faculty members have been dedicatedly contributing to research and teaching focusing on Genetics and Plant Breeding to improve the agricultural crops of our country to adapt the challenges of climate change and population growth. Department already developed two rice varieties (BAU Dhan-2 and BAU Dhan-3), four brassica varieties (Sampad, Shambal, BAU –M/ 395, BAU –M/ 396), four soybean varieties (Sohag, Bragg, Davis, G-2120). Most of those are popular among farmers in different locations of the country. Similar research works with aim to develop climate smart crop varieties are going on by our MS and PhD students under the scholastic supervision of reputed faculty members of the department.
