Crop Botany offers different courses at undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Presently, the department has 20 teaching staffs (14 Professors, 2 Associate Professors, 1 Assistant Professor and 3 Lecturer). Crop Botany covers all aspects of the life of crop plants. The major areas of teaching and research of the department are Plant Physiology, Plant Ecology, Plant Morphology and Taxonomy, Plant Tissue Culture, Plant Biodiversity and conservation, and Medicinal Plants. The department has well-equipped laboratories of Plant Physiology, Plant Ecology, and Plant Anatomy and Tissue Culture. It also has a Field Lab with 6 acres of land. The department focuses research on: (i) Eco-physiologial bases of crop resistance against abiotic stresses like salinity, drought, flood etc. (ii) Biodiversity and Conservation of rare and endangered plant species (iii) Source-Sink Physiology of cereals and legumes (iv) Medicinal plants and functional minor crops (v) Palynology & Plant Systematics (vi) Biochemical characterization of tropical medicinal plants (vii) Nutritional Plant Physiology (viii) Plant Anatomy (ix) Plant-environment interactions (x) Tissue culture and Molecular Biology (xi) Climate Change Models; (xii) Biological Nitrification Inhibition etc.
As a component part of this Department, a Botanical Garden was established in 1962 to use as a field lab for undergraduate and post-graduate studies. About 1500 different plant species are housed in the garden. Numerous visitors from home and abroad visit the garden every year.
